Domain 1: Planning & Preparation

Within the Danielson Framework, Domain 1 shows the way an educator structures the material in which they expect their students to learn. It is the job of an effective teacher to plan their lessons and curriculum incorporating their wide knowledge of the content area, how their content connects to other subject matters, and their understanding of their students’ prior knowledge of the content. It is crucial to have all of these aspects in mind when planning and preparing in order meet one’s students where they are, expand their knowledge on the content area, and draw a through-line for them. It is also a part of an educator’s responsibilities to demonstrate knowledge of resources, ability to choose instructional goals, design a coherent curriculum, and create tools to assess their students’ learning.

Demonstrating Knowledge of Content & Pedagogy

Below are a few of the resources I utilize to inspire and guide my instruction, planning, and assessment as a dance educator. These are my go to's!

The following documents are projects and research I have done based on the biomechanical tendencies and needs of students of various developmental stages. The purpose was to draw a clear connection between natural, daily movements of life, as well as sports and other physical activity to dance movement and how to properly, safely embody the types of movement. Therefore, I can plan in my instruction exactly how to scaffold, chunk, and break down movement for the students based on what I know about their prior knowledge in the content area.

Designing Coherent Instruction

Sample Unit Plan:

This is a sample unit plan for a Hip Hop dance curriculum that I taught to my students. It was a very rich, engaging, and fun unit plan that largely focused on 21st century themes and skills, including critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and technology. My goal was to meet the students where they were in their education and expand on their knowledge and experience of dance performance and collaboration.

Sample Lesson Plans:

These are a few sample lesson plans from the aforementioned Hip Hop dance unit plan above. I gave the students the background and history of this genre of dance, taught them the technique of hip hop dance, and planned collaborative choreography tasks and projects for them to engage in with their peers.
